When you are buying used golf balls, make sure you know what you are getting. Many used golf balls are retrieved from lakes, ponds, streams, deep rough and more. So, you want to make sure you get a clean ball with minimum scars, depending on your intended use.
Know the Grading Scale
The top-graded golf balls may be Grade 1, AAAA, AAA or Mint condition. These have a "slightly used" condition, which ranges from unnoticeable to very minor imperfections. Mint condition used golf balls have a consistent shine and color. In addition, AAAA used golf balls may have company or personal logos as well as standard personal marks.
The next level of quality are Grade 2, Grade AA, AAA or Very Good. These golf balls have slight blemishes, minor scuffs, discoloration and/or club marks. These marks affect only the appearance and do not affect the flight or distance of the ball. Again, these golf balls may have logos and personal marks. Balls are in very good playable condition. Often, this Grade gives you the best VALUE for your money and is suitable for play at any level.
The next grade are Grade 3, Grade A, Grade AA or Good used golf balls. These balls have slightly more scuffs or club marks but no cuts. The color may be off-white or slightly discolored. This grade often may contain x-out and practice balls.
Practice Grade: These used golf balls belong in your shag bag or used for practice. Often, they are in good condition and very playable. Practice grade golf balls have scuffs, discoloration, minor nicks and club marks.
The bottom grade is referred to as "Hitaways Grade." These used golf balls are decent for playing a practice round or driving range. When you buy these used golf balls, expect to get used range balls and most any kind of imperfections except cuts. If you get cut golf balls, make sure to get a replacement or refund.
