When you are buying used golf balls, make sure you know what you are getting. Many used golf balls are retrieved from lakes, ponds, streams, deep rough and more. So, you want to make sure you get a clean ball with minimum scars, depending on your intended use.
Is that neighborhood kid knocking on your backdoor with an egg-carton full of used golf balls? At only $1.00 each, that is a big savings over the price of a brand new golf ball. And those golf-balls that you can buy on-line. Or is it? Every used golf ball has its own history. And all you have to do is look closely at the golf ball to see it. Here are five tips to help you know the quality of the golf ball that you are buying.
1. Color
Look for golf balls that are white or nearly white, if that is the original color. If the golf balls are not even cleaned, but still have dirt and clay on them, pass. If you can't see what you are getting, don't buy it.
2. Smooth Surface
Look at the surface of the ball and feel it in your fingers. Does it feel like the top skin of the ball has been painted? Sometimes, a seller will paint the ball white to make it look better. Well, guess what. A few whacks with your driver and that paint will come flying off. All you need is to have your buddies see that and you'll be a laughing stock.
3. Even Coating
This is like a smooth surface, but different. Some used golf ball sellers will put a new top coat over the used golf ball. This can really affect the golf ball's flight, putting and rolling performance. Look for an uneven surface that seems thicker on one side and not the other.
4. Filled in Scars
Some used golf balls have cuts and scars that are filled in with putty and then sanded down. Look at the dimple pattern on the golf ball. Make sure that there are no spots where the dimples seem to disappear.
5. Get Professional Cleaned Balls
Look out for golf balls that are refinished, painted white or have a new top coat applied to the ball's surface. This process messes up the golf ball's flight, integrity and appearance permanently. Don't waste your money buying cheaply cleaned used golf balls.
